“Good night, and thanks for coming!” Three hours later, Meg waved the last Hot Dogs for Dogs customer out the door. She turned to the trio of McNally sisters, Mike and Grant, who were cleaning up the tables behind her. One of the high school kids had taken Tabitha and Sadie back to the house so they could get to bed at a decent hour. “We did it, didn’t we?”

Cay stopped what she was doing and rushed up to pull Meg into a tight squeeze. “We did, indeed.” She turned to Peggy, who had been tallying up the receipts and the contents of the dog-shaped cookie jar that sat on the counter for extra donations. “How much good did we do, Peggy?”

Peggy had insisted Meg give her a full accounting of the diner’s expenses. They had talked her into a plan to split the proceeds so that the Sundial took some profit from the evening, but Meg had already decided to ignore it. She was going to give her half over to the farm. Tonight felt too good to do anything less than that.

Peggy squinted into her reading glasses and punched a few more numbers on a calculator. “Very good,” she replied.

“Mind putting a number on that ‘very good,’ sis?” Barb called as she tied a garbage bag closed.

“Backing out the food costs, two thousand three hundred twelve dollars and twenty-seven cents,” Peggy proclaimed.

Barb gave a whoop. “That’s almost twelve hundred a piece for the farm and the diner.”

“Eleven hundred fifty-six and thirteen cents. Well, one of us gets fourteen cents.”

“No. You get it all. I already decided,” Meg declared. For the first time in forever, a risk felt exciting instead of terrifying. She had two weeks until the next loan payment. Surely God would provide, and it felt so very healing to be generous. If nothing broke and business stepped up just a little bit more, she could squeak by.

Grant’s expression darkened instantly. “Mom, don’t let her do that.”

Cay chose now of all times to listen to her son. “I agree. Half the proceeds go to you, just like we agreed, Meg.” She pointed to the sign on the wall that reminded customers half of all tonight’s proceeds went to Three Sisters Rescue Farm. “Grant could arrest us for false advertising if we go back on our claim.”

Grant glowered at his mother. “Technically, no, but do what Mom says anyway.”

Cay walked over to Meg. “You’ve been more than generous, hon. Half is enough.”

Enough. How often did her weary heart cry, It’s not enough? Cay was telling her it was enough. She’d felt her joy returning tonight. And hadn’t she just declared her trust that God would provide? What if that’s exactly what He was doing? Wouldn’t Grant be shocked to find she’d heard God’s protection in his sharp warnings?

Suddenly it became easy to stick to the original agreement. The need to make some big, grand gesture dissolved. She’d wanted tonight to help her feel more hopeful, less pressed, and it had.
